Here's what a nuclear reactor starting up looks like

Oh, to have been stood behind her with an inflated balloon and a sharp pin.

@simonize Jimmy Carter? A real American Hero!

@strangefriendbb The book also covered the real, “Shit Hits the Fan” style things, like 3 Mile Island. I remember watching footage from one of the remote controlled vehicles that went in to 3 Mile Island as part of the clean up. You could see the video image decaying, and the vehicle’s movements getting more and more sluggish as, I presume, radiation cooked its electronics. Where’s Ferro when you need her?

I always wanted to know what the inside of the Tower of London looked like.

Yeah, Carter kind of “worked on” the reactor; after the accident that meant get in quickly pick up fuel with tongs, drop into a barrel, get out. They don’t seem to admit it anywhere, but IIRC locals consider a few scientists to have eventually died of cancer from radiation exposure in the initial phases of that accident. They went through about a batallion (edit) of troops in the rest of the clean-up, IIRC.

It’s a shame they’ve taken down the huge “Do Not Photograph” sign on the river side, everyone in Deep River had a picture of that.

thanks, I just wanted to mention that, cause weirdly enough just saw this episode just 2 days ago

I toured the one at WSU once. Sadly, their safety regs wouldn’t let them pulse it any more, but it was still well worth a 6 hour drive from Seattle. Cherenkov radiation is gorgeous.
