Hey, remember number stations? Whatever happened to them?

Numbers stations were featured in Julian Simpson’s adaptation of ‘The Whisperer in Darkness’ last year. The podcast is still available- don’t feel obliged to listen to all of episode 9.

Good call. Episode nine was a relief after the Mulholland Drivey episode eight.

In 1970 I was shown around a TV surveillance van in England that roamed around looking for TVs that had no license. They used a receiver to pick up spurious emissions from TVs and could tell what channel you were watching and even if the set was tuned properly. No license, get a fine.

Uhm, there’s NO NEED for spying anymore when you literally have Putin’s puppet sitting in the oval office.

The Mark Thomas Comedy Product had a show on these back in the 90’s

Numbers stations aren’t broadcasting the pads- the pads have to be distributed beforehand, which is the big drawback of the system. The broadcast is the encrypted message, which only makes sense in combination with the pad.

Key generation and distribution is the big problem, hence all the secret squirrel stuff to conceal and smuggle tiny, easily destroyed code books.

Free speech means leaving the Feds and the Crown alone.

They absolutely are not obsolete - they still work wonderfully. If the numbers read were code messages, they were a book code. Somewhere, a spy has a book that lists the numbers, or groups of numbers, and provides a written meaning for each. That is still the most secure code there is, because the only way to decipher a transmission is to have the book. And to get that you have to already know who the spy is and where he keeps that book.

They could have used a frigging phone call and had perfect reporting for zero cost. Whoever made the decision to get a custom made app for that was either a hopelessly incompetent idiot or he was a shill/relative of someone who owned the company that made it. In either case he should be unemployed and homeless right now.
There was an article on the web that the leadership of the DNC actually ignored and overruled a warning from their very own chief of cybersecurity, who said NOT to get the app. That tells me it was a freaking kickback/cronyism deal.

Exact. It’s like that poster I saw a while back - “MAGA” really means “Moscow’s Agent Grifting America”.

I sold most of my CDs in the early 00s but I kept my Conet Project discs. But yeah that was the 90s. It all blurs after a while.
