#1

Cecilia Malmstrom, who was recently nominated to serve as the European Trade Commissioner. has stated that the “right to sue” provision that has subordinated so much environmental legislation to the whims of international corporations is a toxic element.

The nominee, Cecilia Malmstrom, told a packed hearing at the European Parliament in Brussels that a proposed trade-pact measure that would give companies the right to sue countries was a “nuclear weapon” that might have to be abandoned.

Similar provisions were included in the Trans Pacific Partnership agreement, putting Canadian environmental regulations under threat

She also believes that treaties should be negotiated under less secretive conditions.

So. There may be some hope yet.
