How TurboTax tricks you into paying to file your taxes

I use the same on the recommendation of a friend who was a CPA and now is a CFO.

It is good and cheap.

How many people need to file taxes this way? In the UK it’s about 1/3 of workers - normally because of personal income not taxed elsewhere (Rental income/self employed work etc) - Student loan repayments don’t trigger needing one, neither does “payment in kind” like health care etc.
The HMRC interface is pretty good for free.

…and this surprises anyone?

I probably should have clarified that, because I ran into the same problem with a typo in my employer’s address once too. In my case it was relatively easy because my taxes are relatively easy, but yes, same format as just filling out the forms by hand. Honestly, I’m one of those weirdos who will fill out the paper form by hand and then just plug it all into the fillable form option. In that case, the main benefit over mailing it in is the response time and saving a stamp, I guess.
