That’s further downriver than I’m familiar with. When I was a kid, my mom’s parents lived in northeast Missouri, and I remember the Canton ferry. That one shut down a few years ago, when the old boat would have needed far too many repairs. It was run by a grain co-op in Ursa, IL, not by either state DOT. The only alternative crossings are the bridges at Quincy and Keokuk.
Hah! No, he and his pants were long gone.
It was still there when I drove past at 4pm to pick my wife up from work. She’s going to let me know if it’s gone today.
I’m not anything close to an expert, but it looks like the front had the most damage, so I was thinking it could have been an out of control engine fire. My (now) ex’s car caught on fire the same way in her work parking lot, but they put it out before the whole thing was gutted.
I’m a nut for ferries of all sizes, from water taxis to the big boys, but river crossings are my favorite.
Even though, living where I am, it’s easy to get to Michigan via 80/94, I’ve sometimes thought about taking a trip where I’d take the Milwaukee-Muskegon high-speed catamaran one way, and the Manitowoc-Ludington S.S. Badger the other.
Never had the chance myself, but I hear that catamarans are like Concorde: your teeth will quickly I learn to appreciate slower modes of transport.
Thunderbirds are GO!
Compass plant, probably (Silphium laciniatum). It’s peak wildflower season in Missouri.
Rough coneflower, probably (Rudbeckia grandiflora)
Purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), these are in our yard but they are common on roadsides
A redundantly duplicative name for a school:
I like the mascot!
(And their web page tells us these Twister Traits:
Respectful * Peaceful * Responsible)
Backyard monarch Caterpillar. We have plans to plant a variety of native milkweeds next spring. While the tropical is adapted, it isn’t native to central Texas. We’ve found a source for native seed.
Aw… sweetie kitty!
Random pics from Kivinokka Old Forest Nature Conservation Site in Helsinki, Finland. 15mins walk from a Kulosaari or Herttoniemi metro stations.
Been preoccupied last few days, but this was the first day I realized that I couldn’t see any fires on the mountain (view from my parents’ house, I had more expansive views earlier, but I was driving).
From Tucson the Catalinas appear as a great East-West wall, but in actuality they run North-South much further, and the fire is indeed still burning.
