Mexican redbud blooming. The flowers and seed pods are edible, btw.

If Eastern redbuds’ flowers and seeds are edible like their Mexican cousins, I wish more critters of all types would eat more of them. Every single seed that drops from my neighbors’ trees into my yard sprouts and immediately sends down a taproot that makes weeding them out difficult. In their defense, they’re native and look pretty for the five minutes they’re in bloom.

Do American Coots dive when they feed? Those look like the little fellows we love to watch dive in the park and guess where they’re going to re-surface.

Look at the pollen in that pond! :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:

I like the way you can see the coot’s foot so clearly!
Also - reminds me to keep my eyes open for “coltsfoot,” one of our earliest-blooming plants around here…

Here’s a Eurasian coot from a couple years ago. It’s still cold here, so they probably won’t be back for a week or two.

That sounds more like crepe myrtles. Those things are impossible to kill. The eastern redbud is also edible. Harvest flowers for a salad or the young pods (less than an inch) to eat raw or cooked. Cook the pods any way you would snow peas. Eastern Red Bud: Pea Pods Tree - Eat The Weeds and other things, too
