It was said that there were actual cases where lost or stranded travelers made it to deserted cabins, only to be out of luck for lack of a quarter for whatever pay phone might be present. I guess the advice dated back to some obscure period in which operator-assisted calls didn’t exist.
In even earlier times one might have included a dime which would have served double-duty as a flathead screwdriver, but those days are long past.
