Consensus in the face of byzantine failures is a hard problem, but it was already a solved problem before bitcoin came along. The Byzantine Paxos protocol isn’t exactly lightweight, but with a reasonable number of acceptor nodes it’s going to be a whole lot better than the horror-show that is the blockchain.
