My understanding is that one of the reasons that they decided on Lunar Orbit Rendezvous was that it meant landing a MUCH smaller craft on the moon. They were basically caching the heatshield, parachutes, supplies for the voyage home, and the fuel to propel all of that towards Earth in Lunar orbit with a caretaker.
