Tests with medieval armor and medieval crossbows have shown that wasn’t a thing. To be fair, it wasn’t a thing with longbows, either. Bows (long- or cross-) were effective at taking down knights’ horses, to eliminate their main advantage, mobility. Once on the ground, knights were still formidable due to armor and training, but could be picked at from a distance and/or toppled by polearms. A knight off his feet was a dead knight, generally speaking.
