LG TV phones home with your viewing habits, names of files you screen, even if you tell it not to

This is shitty, but not unexpected. Knowledge is power and now we have the power.

Various solutions include:

  1. Adding the LG servers to a router-level firewall
  2. Not connecting your TV to the internet for anything but firmware updates (or at all)
  3. Rename all files to “midgetporn.avi” before playing

Out of curiosity, did the RFP include ‘electronics module Shall be resistant to ingress of vile carbonated fructose syrup fluid?’

Because that seems like the obvious reaction to the paparazzi in this case…

Didn’t see the RFP personally, but nothing would surprise me, lol.
I suppose it would be even easier to screw with the camera, tho. I could see a wave of adolescent pwnage sweeping the nation…

For that matter, could send absolute waves of ‘Screw LP.avi’ files from one’s TV?
Edit: Better idea. Porn involving LP’s corporate officers?

I sense a new kind of blackhole list in the offing…

We bought an LG 55" 3D TV (55LA6200) last month through Amazon. If they are going to blame it on the seller, why don’t they update the product listing for all of the retailers selling this TV on Amazon?

I called LG yesterday, demanding to know how to disable this “feature” for real, not through the pretend menu. Naturally, the person on the phone didn’t know what I was talking about, but he was receptive to the idea of me emailing him the boingboing post. I have not yet heard back.

If this issue is not resolved, I will be leaving a review on the product’s Amazon page. I will probably leave the same review on every listing of this TV I can find on Amazon.

For example:

Mmmmm! What’s that smell? Is that a fresh raspberry pi?

It will eliminate set top boxes for some things-- but not others. You’ll still need a set top box.

Oh come on.I bought a inexpensive LG TV last month that doesn’t do apps, wifi, 3D, or 120Hz. All it does is render blurays beautifully. The built in test patterns are a nice touch.
