Oh, I used to listen to that on the BFBS back in the days of Humph Lyttelton… I should pick it up again; intelligent entertainment isn’t exactly ubiquitous.
I know it from Pratchett, but I’m not surprised it’s also turned up in ISIHAC
Sergeant Colon did know the meaning of the word “irony”. He thought it meant “sort of like iron” (Reaper Man)
If anything is a pun, it’s an almost cast iron(y) certainty it has turned up in ISIHAC at some point in the past several decades. Currently working my way through what is an almost complete collection of every show and finding, unsurprisingly that some UED definitions appear more than once.
(PS I think Sgt. Colon’s usage is more like Dr. Johnson’s than the ISIHAC usage. Punning and pedantry go together well!)
The voice was Sidney Morgenbesser, who was pretty good with the quips. Such as:
Why is God making me suffer so much? Just because I don’t believe in him?
Thanks. One more thing I learnt today.
No. NEVER.
