Are there actual Welsh rabbits, known as such, or just rabbits who happen to live in Wales?
She seems to have developed quite a track record for socio-political woo …
… which doesn’t help her defend this sort of thing as an honest mistake.
Based on the Law of Crank Magnetism chemtrails won’t be the only nuttiness rolling around in her noggin.
Awww, great catch!! “RarebitFiend” was my first online nym back in the BBS days.
To make things worse, there are not only journalists trying to break down matters which are very complex, without trying to understand them properly. Politicians did this for decades, and are of course still doing it. Other people also fiddle in pop science bits and pieces - an example of this is the German forester Peter Wohlleben. As a forester, he knows a lot about trees and forests, but his anthropomorphisms and many misunderstandings about the science he tries to write about are horrible to behold if you actually are a scientist. (I couldn’t even finish any of his books.)
That said, scientific specialisation is very, very high, and complex subjects broken down to be digested by the general public are bound to be misreported and misunderstood by authors and readers.
Seems there’s no way popsci can satisfy the expert and the public alike - except some authors & publishers can do it. Even the references stand scrutiny. Can recommend, e.g., Andrea Wulf’s "The Invention of Nature*, and everything by Tim.Birkhead.
Bwahahhahahaha. Thanks for that.
This was an unanswered question I have had for many years. Thank you, @dfaris, for giving me the answer!
This is exactly it. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.
Pretty presumptious to assume someone’s on a mobile device.
@anon67050589 did write “Depending on your hardware,” but whatever.
Yes, that does put a different complexion on it. I was thinking of it more like she’d erroneously “discovered” something from first principles, but if she is aware of conclusions by actual experts, and assumes her non-expert reading of primary sources qualifies her to dismiss them, then that’s fully her fault and makes it unlikely the world needs her book. BOBTATO SYMPATHY RESCINDED
I think that the reason that I have refused to watch or listen to that moment for Wolf is because the same reason that I walk out of most The Office episodes like twenty times.
When you are raised in the cringe, when you are born into it, when the cringe springs forth from your existence like from the Blowhole of Ignorance and Bad Decision Making there is not much reason to see my sisters and brothers of House Cringe swing our mighty couch cushion about like a doofus.
Laziest technique:
Google blase copy and paste blasé from the results.
Well it’s also been the behavior of the last several versions of macOS (irritatingly, you don’t even have the option to revert to “typematic” behavior for the affected keys)
Assuming your question is serious (and apologies if it isn’t): Welsh rabbit is a fancy variation on the British staple snack/meal cheese on toast (in USian terms, an open grilled-cheese sandwich). No actual rabbit involved.
You’ve never had the trauma of eating it then? The very words bring a shudder, and unpleasant childhood memories.
I have, and if you put a nice slice of tomato on top of it it is quite good!
