Interesting bit of linguistic culture:

English is notable for having different words for the animals and the meat. Pig vs pork, cow vs beef, sheep vs mutton.

In each case, the word for the animal comes from the Anglo-Saxon, while the word for the meat derives from Norman French.

It’s a consequence of the Norman Conquest (William the Bastard et al). The Anglo-Saxon peasants raised the animals, the Norman nobility ate the animals.
