Dave Barry’s novel “Tricky Business” had a running gag about a TV news reporter getting killed reporting on a hurricane, and after every story update, yet another reporter has died trying to report on the story about the reporter getting killed, up to and including a helicopter crash. Dave Barry somehow made it funny.

the intersection in the op is clearly a problem and would be difficult for drivers to navigate: a wide fast busy street with no light or stop sign at a t. there’s just too many things that can go wrong. ( the cross walk right there with no island, and no lights – looks like a nightmare )

yes, you have some drivers like the one caught on video who are just plain dangerous. but the street itself, and the city for not doing something about it, also are to blame.

it’s also possible that what she said was true at the time.

her work started in the early 50s and i would argue that “science” was used a lot at that time to dismiss people’s concerns about things.

we’ve seen how highways were used to disrupt black communities in the name of “good social planning” and “progress” – and she started exactly at the time that was happening.

Off-topic: OK, so for the past month or two the 11-foot-8 (plus 8) underpass has been closed, due to some sort of extensive utility work under Gregson St. (I don’t think they actually did anything about relocating that sewer under the bridge, though). But finally as of the other day it’s open again! Perhaps we’ll see some updates in this space before long.

I don’t think so. Where are you that cars get inspected like that? I’m in Illinois and we don’t have inspections like that.

Other than emissions testing every two years, thats all Illinois requires yeah.

It amazes me that there are major differences in regulations between states for motor vehicle and traffic laws. I learned to drive in NJ, where inspections were thorough and conducted in state-run facilities. My brother bought a car out of state and was flagged for misaligned headlights. Maybe they’re strict because of high population density (and insurance rates). OTOH, there are states where a scene like this would’ve ended with just a speeding ticket:

II mean, there’s also precedent for how the pandemic has altered the face of many state agencies. California allowed me to transfer my driver’s AND motorcycle licenses without the need for testing because the pandemic reduced the employee pool enough to seriously affect how they do business.

(I would have been fine with taking the test anyway)

Germany. Mandatory road-worthiness and emission inspections every two years, with color coded decals on the back plate for fast visual inspections while parking or during traffic stops.

This one codes “next inspection due in August 2021”, i.e. you’re now 6 months overdue and they’ll likely ground your car right now. Oh, and give you a €75 fee and one point. 8 points – think of them as a previous conviction/infraction counter – and your license goes “poof”. They expire after a while, though.
