Not a mechanically secure splice. Relying just on solder to hold stuff together is a bad idea.

I’m a fan of the WU splice, but if you chase through the Wikipedia references to the write up on the lap splice (shown in the OP), you’ll find that the splice itself isn’t a source of later failure if down properly.
