Man buys used Tesla with autopilot. Tesla remotely disables autopilot: "not a feature that you had paid for"

Well the article was pretty clear Tesla reduced the value of a used Tesla. One. By noticing it accidentally had a feature enabled that had not been paid for, and disabling it.

They did not decide that because the original owner bought the feature, but the new owner didn’t that the feature would be disabled.

If that were the case I would absolutely agree the value of all used Teslas with post-sale enabled features would be lower. I would absolutely agree that would make the value of enabling them also lower to anyone who takes resale value into account (and in general taking that into account on large purchases is a good idea).

And Musk still ‘profits’ from the cult-of-personality.

Criminal hacking charges, even. End user agreements aren’t transferrable, afaik.

Microsoft’s MO was never to deactivate remotely. They had more fun sending the federal marshals in to demand the original proof of purchase for every piece of software on every computer in the company. Look at what happened with Ernie Ball.

How long until auto manufacturers just brick all until the second hand buyers pay them a fee and sign the surveillance agreement?

But - there is no full self driving autopilot.

Meh, Tesla is overrated and Musk is a moron.

It was painfully obvious Tesla always would go this route, since they charge to ‘upgrade’ battery capacity via software unlock. It’s no different than Amazon’s revoking of copies of George Orwell’s 1984 from Kindles. Remember that?

Stories like this make me crazy – it’s like saying “Iowa needs reform vs. Iowa did allright” when the real question is why the fuck we let Iowa go first and why we let their dumbass high-school-gym hootenanny results matter?

If you have a Tesla, you don’t care about having an electrical car. Because you could BUY TWO Nissan Leafs and tie one to each foot like a ROLLER SKATE for the price of one Tesla ‘performance’ Model S. AND STILL HAVE 30k.

So yeah, Elon Musk is Harold Hill in a zip-up fleece, and I, much like Humvee drivers, judge the bejabers out of Tesla owners. Because nothing says “I’m better than you” than Eco-conscious conspicuous consumption.

This makes zero sense to me.

Sure the Leaf is cheaper, but all owning a Model S and not a Leaf says to me is you liked the Model S more then a Leaf and you bought it.

Actually it might say you bought the Model S years before the Leaf was for sale.

I know someone with a Leaf, their daily commute fits int he Leaf’s theoretical range. It doesn’t fit in the observed in real life range, so they need to park at another companies offices (mine!) and charge it every day so they can get home. If they had a Tesla they could make the round trip (which is all you really need because with an EV getting a full charge at home every single night is easy, unlike say a gas car where it would be a significant pain). They could make multiple round trips in fact.

So owning a Tesla and not a Leaf could mean they work 45 miles from home and don’t have a reliable way to charge at the office.

It could just mean you don’t like the Leaf, and do like the Tesla.

If you want to make a “if you own X you don’t care about owning an electric car” the X would be a “not electric car”, and even there you aren’t exactly correct.

A lot of people only own used cars worth under $3000 because that is what they can afford. They aren’t getting an EV for a long time. Like until a used EV actually reaches that price, and is still useful. Maybe even not just useful but better then used gas cars at $3k and under.

I don’t own an electric car, or at least I own a plug in battery hybrid. If I go over about 20 miles I’m a gas car, under 20 and I’m not. So you could say I don’t care about owning an electric car. I definitely didn’t care about owning one enough to buy a model S at the time, but I would consider a model 3 if I were buying today. I also hear Hyaundi makes a nice EV, so I would look at that too. My car is actually a lease, and up in Decemberish.

I’m actually likely not to get a car at all though. In the last year I have gone from putting about five miles a day on my car to riding an electric scooter. Depending on how well I make it through the bad weather part of the year I’ll stick to it. Not really to save the earth though, I just figure one less monthly payment will be good for me.

“If you have a rambler you don’t like houses because you could buy two A-frames” – said nobody ever I hope!

Yep, Musk is a loon. I’ll admit I use to admire him, but either I was an idiot or he has changed. Either way I sure don’t now. It doesn’t make the Tesla a bad car though, but the companies founder being a loon should probably be factored in when you are thinking about how long the company will exist to make spares for anything that might break. Just because EVs are more reliable then gas cars doesn’t mean they never need new parts.

It’s why I plan to buy a 30 year old BMW or Mercedes in a few years when I retire, because I would like to do the brakes, change the oil, essentially take care of easy maintenance things myself. I like messing around with my car. But once software enters the picture, you need the manufacturer to update it, maintain it, etc. Of course, because you have to do this at a BMW or Mercedes dealer, you get $20/quart magic oil and $350/hr labor - making an oil change $300 and a brake job $1500. (If you think I am exaggerating, call a dealer and ask)

You own it as long as nothing needs to be fixed. Note: All cars need to be fixed, and often.

There are aftermarket software applications. Some are even manufacturer semi-official:

Meanwhile, Tesla can’t refund features that someone buys by accident.

Seems like someone at Tesla needs to get their stories straight.

Perhaps you would be interested in driving, err, riding as a service? Turns out that is exactly the endgame of self driving cars.

No worries. I’m sure Tesla has the Hollywood accounting cost calculations to prove that $8k is a bargain and the price must be >$10k or so for them to make a profit.

It’s the hair implants, I’m tellin’ ya. That sort of thing never end well.
