I watched a Chinese historical drama called “Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace” (not as raunchy as it sounds!) about the emperor who ruled from about 1744-99, and his wives and concubines. It threw me off initially when I could hear background ticking and started noticing western clocks. Apparently many of the emperors were collectors of western clocks and automata, starting the collection in the early 1600’s as gifts from western emissaries.
