Where did all the Old Economy Stevens come from?
“Free” healthcare isn’t really free. It’s withheld from our paychecks. It’s ridiculous to think that people aren’t entitled to what they’re literally paying for.
It would have to be, because those rents are like Dayton OH circa 2005.
And yet…
In 2005 I was renting a 2bd, 2ba fairly large house on the 4th fairway of a semi private golf course for $800/mo. Nowadays that house is at least 2x the cost.
True, but I also believe healthcare should be a right even for people who have no paychecks at all.
And to head off any mention of “value-driven income”, refusing care in the face of a life or death outcome is probably the lowest of the low.
Wow… do you guys ever read through a thread and wonder if a participant or two isn’t just possibly one of these folks?
Sometimes, I do.
O_o
Anyhoos, I want to live in a healthy functioning society that supports its most vulnerable members instead of feeding on them. In order for that kind of society to exist and be sustainable, things like universal health care, affordable housing and living wages are absolutely essential.
Who gets to decide what goes to whom?
Gotcha. So if a small child needs a major operation, they can just literally die in a ditch. After all, they contribute nothing to society, and they don’t even pay taxes.
Not necessarily The Sociopath Next Door, but maybe just The Racist Next Door. Or Xenophobe.
Scratch the surface, and you know what they think an adult making minimum wage is. Or a welfare recipient. Or who’s entitled to what, or what constitutes a handout and what doesn’t.
ETA: or what kind of unskilled worker supports a family of ten and TERK ER JERBS!
They can be both.
They sure can be.
But all the dogs on this block are going nuts from all the racist dog whistles in this thread.
For sure. Also re: “TERK ER JERBS!”. The good ol’ Schrodinger’s Immigrant: Simultaneously taking their jobs AND lounging around on welfare.
Oh, absolutely.
Still regardless to whatever the ‘trigger’ may be, the root cause is all the same, IMO; a severe lack of empathy or whatever it is that makes most humans give even the tiniest semblance of a fuck about other people outside of themselves.
Better to say the result is the same. One is the inability to feel empathy, the other the ability to feel empathy is being overridden by fear and ignorance. One can be fixed (theoretically), the other can’t.
Give it a name, the end result is still the same:
Anybody who only cares about themselves will eventually end up with only that; themselves.
if it were about a heart transplant, costing hundreds of very sophisticated work hours and expensive materials, for someone who has not contributed much to the shared wealth of society, this’ gonna turn sour real quick.
Poor people and children getting life-saving heart surgery? Wow that’s quite the dystopia you’ve painted right there.
From $7.25 per hour to $9 per hour. Yay!
Hah, as if. When I worked at the movie theater, I started at $6.75. getting promoted to a lead position meant that your pay cap (CAP!) was $8.10. I know because that’s the most I was ever allowed to be paid. My manager was not allowed to pay me more, and there was no opportunity for advancement beyond that point because my manager was already in the manager position I would have wanted/been qualified for, and he never left so that I could take his place. I worked there for over 4 years.
refusing care in the face of a life or death outcome is probably the lowest of the low.
You misspelled “provably” there.
It’s a distinction that won’t matter to anyone on the receiving end, for sure. Both can be solved but require very different approaches, which is why it’s important to acknowledge there is a difference though.
