National Geographic's plastics issue is a huge wake-up call

Well, if you don’t count the humans themselves. Disposable culture is a war culture.

Isn’t that a bit like saying we don’t throw away beer cans because someone will pick your trash and sell them to recyclers?

Yes and no. The junkies do pick up every scrap of metal and drag it to the recycling yard, even if it’s still attached to something.

Cars get cannibalized very, very thoroughly, down to the last bolts. So, the owner THINKS they’re throwing it away, and maybe they think it’s getting buried in a landfill somewhere. But as soon as a car gets towed away, the scavengers come running to unbolt the parts needed to keep their own car alive.

I’ve been trying to replace my factory-issued driver’s seat for about ten years, but my make/model’s front seats were so uncomfortable, that even if I hit the junkyard as soon as a wrecked upgrade of my model pops up on the inventory, the seats have already been snatched up.

That the things we throw away are later used by someone else does not mean the item thrown away wasn’t thrown away.
