This is similar to my philosophy. It’s not that I won’t ever pay for anything, I will and do in many cases. But part of that is dependent on the streaming service acting in good faith on their side and providing a worthwhile experience, as well. If they show utter contempt for their customers because they think we don’t have any other options, they can expect that same contempt in return. Or, to put it another way, I usually don’t resort to piracy unless it’s the only reasonable way to get something (usually obscure stuff that I just want to watch once and discard, rather than paying $30 plus shipping for an obsolete DVD that will arrive in six weeks, which I don’t even have any desire to own). If streaming services make piracy the only way to get a viewing experience that isn’t ruined with obnoxious ads, then that’s their choice.

The first time I saw that reality TV was on Netflix I nearly quit on the spot. The streaming services were supposed to save us from that hellscape. Instead they have embraced it.

It’s cheap, it draws viewers, even if they might regret it afterwards, and Netflix isn’t a B corp that has values to abide by above profits.
It was only a matter of time.
