I always expected that, at some point, we’d engineer better birds as the ultimate surveillance drones, but in the end that only appears to have happened in movies.

It occurs to me that one reason this is so new is that we needed tiny computers and tiny powerful motors in order to do this, since they have to be so small. I imagine some of these can’t be done any bigger because the structures needed would weigh too much. Something like a square-cube law at work?
Just some engineering intuition at work here, so I may be completely wrong.
