This is so interesting! Text-based games seem to offer such different sharing potential than games marketed through consoles. Tougher to commodify maybe … accessible with less bandwidth and less hardware … easier to alternate between reader/author roles.

Japan has no problem commodifying visual novels, which are very little more than text with illustrations. But even the most popular ones don’t sell in the States, they’re just not game-y enough.

True. I didn’t think about that example. And I guess comics and movies-and-games-based-on-comics might support that point too.
Visual novels are starting to pick up over here lately, though they’re still niche.
