I guess you could say it didn’t live up to its…

Man, that is really sad.

FYI, though. The photo at the top of the article is the wrong building.
As per the linked NOLA piece -

Perseverance Hall is not to be confused with the historic Perseverance Hall No. 4, an older Masonic Lodge building, also built by La Société de la Perseverance, which stands in Armstrong Park.

A tragic and heartbreaking loss. Thanks for the music and unbelievable kindness.

Just to make sure people aren’t confusing them, the Perseverance Halls are unrelated to Preservation Hall – except that both are New Orleans jazz landmarks in historic buildings.
The Perseverance Halls were opened in the mid-19th century to recognize the culture and music of the city. Preservation Hall was opened mid 20th century and is still working as a guardian of the groove exposing new generations to New Orleans jazz.

It is really disappointing that nothing was done for over a year to repair this building, but as Perseverance and Preservation (and the no doubt soon-to-be-born Persistance) Halls attest, the city keeps up the music no matter what

Huh. I saw the symbol and was thinking “The Masons were the Secret Masters of Jazz?”

That’s the wrong photo in the article. The building that collapsed was a single-story structure.

As a historian, and someone who gives a shit about historic preservation… it’s not really a joke. NOLA is one of our oldest and most unique cities in the US. :woman_shrugging: Doubly depressing and not worth joking about, since this is Black history, too.

Can you post an image or link to the correct building?

Hopefully something positive will come out of this tragedy if it can persuade the current owners of the Buddy Bolden house to restore it, like they said they would a decade ago, before it too suffers the same fate

If only the city had had a Perspicacious Hall, all this could have been avoided.
