Intriguing, to be sure, yet of all the places to stuff the macguffin…

with the hardware packed into the keyboard.

i’d think you’d not want to lock in the keyboard, as that’s a major point of nerd sectarianism [gormless emoji]

AIO keyboards are cute, but the keyboard is a point of failure, too. I’ll pass.

It’d be nice if you could get the 400/500 mainboards separately from the entire keyboard assembly(obviously you can just crack one open; but that feels wasteful).

It’s not for everything, being a fair bit larger; but having all the I/O on one side of the board is a major boon vs. the smaller Pi’s “you’ll have access to all sides, right?” port layout for a fair few applications; while being cheaper and easier than doing a low-volume carrier board for the compute module.

I wonder if the group buy cycle could sustain something a little more specialized, the mech keyboard folks. Basically just keyboards with a space in it for a specific compatible SBC.

I looked up the Pi 400 and it seems to cost $100 as a kit.

Damn. That’s insane.

My first computer was a Sinclair ZX80. Pretty much the exact same form factor as the Pi 400: a box with a keyboard and some connectors. It, too, cost $100 as a kit. In 1980 dollars. That’s about $380±5 in today’s money, if online inflation calculators are to be believed. It had a whole 1k of RAM and a 3.25mhz Z80. The Pi 400 has four gigabytes of RAM and a 1.8ghz ARM CPU. Computers have gotten a lot more complicated over the past 44 years.

When I think of the “oldschool way”, I think of kids sitting in front of a TV with 17x29 pixels and typing in basic programs from a magazine.

I for one don’t miss the days when pulling you keyboard closer could dislodge all kinds of vital cables, like the power cable for example.

Two sides, actually. But you only need access to the side with the USB ports for daily work anyway. And angled cables exist, making this even less of an issue for those people who don’t just velcro their PI to the back of their screen.

It’s funny, $100 still seems to be the going price for a ZX81 these days. Around here, you can get only get them cheaper in classifieds as “found in the attic” (a.k.a. broken beyond repair).
