Number of Americans who believe in God is at its lowest since at least 1944

I said it’s my need to help with what I believe.

A proper atheist actively believes there is no god, whereas I neither believe nor disbelieve. I exist in a perpetual state of accepted ignorance about whether a deity does exist or could exist or if I could know if one exists. That’s agnosticism.

Some people think you must either believe or not believe, that the issue is binary, but I don’t see it that way. It’s possible to unask the question because the question isn’t the right one to ask. I don’t define myself by what others consider to be the important question. I don’t see that it matters if you believe or not.

In other news, the number of gods who believe in America is still holding steady at…zero.

That would be an anti-theist. Atheism simply means “the evidence for a god or gods is unconvincing”.

Agnosticism is what we called it 'round my way.

The agnostic knows that we always have the choice not to jump from the diving board at all.

No Proof for Either

I guess I’m agnostic. But i distanced myself from the church I grew up in gradually, not because I stopped believing in God, but because the church itself and the people there stopped reflect my values. The antagonism against immigrants and the LGBT community and general Trumpiness of the town I grew up in made me question the sincerity of belief in the things I thought I had learned as a kid from the same church about love and compassion. (I know there are some Methodist churches actually that have literally housed and protected immigrants and welcomed the LGBT community, but that isn’t the case across the board and from what I hear in a lot of the church leadership)

I still have some lingering faith in there but I figure if God exists in the way I was taught as a kid, probably the best way to live is to do the things I already think I should logically do: namely show compassion towards other people and life forms and the world we live in. That’s something that I think makes sense even if you don’t believe a higher power is commanding it.

“Mind your own business” seems an odd position to take in a public forum that promotes discussion.

Just sayin’…

Perhaps miracles are still happening but ‘god’ makes people sign NDA’s?

She’s not addressing people discussion this issue, she talking about people out in the world who feel the need to make everyone else in the human race conform to their world view. She’s not remotely shutting down discussion.

If God exists and you are trying Pascal’s wager, then you are still going to Hell and will probably get special treatment for being a smart arse. Don’t fuck around with omniscient beings.

As long as you’re sure the voice in your head is God’s, go for it. Your faith is the important thing.

But if I really tried to believe, and just had a few nagging doubts, that’s okay isn’t it? I think I saw that on a TV show.

I believe that if you’re Catholic this ends you up in purgatory for longer. And I suppose if you are really playing it safe, you’re Catholic
