I don’t agree that that explanation is sufficient, firstly because it
only defines “web crawler” and not the other terms they use (such as
“scrape”), but also because, as you say, it lacks the important
context of what the tool is used for and why a person might need it. I
exaggerated when I said “never explained any of it”, but the
explanation they gave isn’t enough.
I’m finding it hard to penetrate this post because while the tone seems sarcastic, and some of the examples are specious, the principle of what you’re saying sounds wonderful. The day can’t come fast enough that public keys and the birthday problem, installing and using free software, and implementing different algorithms are on the curriculum.
