Right after Chernobyl the Observer published a radiation map of Europe. There was a huge concentration in a ring around Sellafield. Some minister – probably Nigella Lawson’s dad – issued a statement saying that no, honestly, all that radiation really was from Chernobyl.

Well, arguably the biggest change they made to improve safety after the problems at Windscale was renaming it Sellafield.

Oh yes, the spring of 1986 was an interesting time…
I was halfway through with my national service at the time. We broke out all of our detection gear and wandered all over the barracks’ grounds. Turned out our zone was one of the areas that had next to no fallout.

My uncle used to work at Sellafield, and I was forbidden to discuss anything related with his work by my family because of things like this. He still might work there, he is below retirement age.

Tonight as it was getting dark, my mom changed the nectar in the hummingbird feeder. Just after she put it back on the hook, and barely moved her hand out of the way, VOOM! a hummingbird landed with her standing right there.

After that, there was a continuous landing pattern until it was dark. They know when it’s the Good Stuff!
