Off to Google I go.
It’s a British thing. They use it all the time to refer to scientists and other smart people, but we just go “dafuq is a boffin”. The closest we have is “nerd”, which doesn’t cut it at all. Maybe “wonk”, but that’s not quite right either.
We have no respectful slang terms for smart sciencey people, and somehow I’m not surprised.
