One professor's nightmare renting her house through the sharing economy

Hmm, I think you might be right, and my wit seems a tad dull these days.

Events #3 and 4 sound more like psychosis than just rude, uncaring people I think.

#4 certainly, or at least a major douche. #3 was more just a moron (in retrospect).

9 times out of 10, regardless of context, the answer is yes.

In Ohio, they’re not allowed to turn off your heating fuel until April. April Fools - cold showers for accounts in arrears.

How far from shore?

Heh. I was tied to the dock. I did consider throwing his stuff into the ocean, but I harboured no ill will towards his guitar, just himself.

Bizarre addendum - I ran into him a couple of years ago (20 years after the event) and he was working as a security guard in a costume shop.

Or maybe he was just trying on a security guard costume?

My ex (BSc in theoretical physics) and his friend (structural engineer) went to IKEA and bought a long, low bookcase to go under my ex’s front window. I offered to help assemble it since I like that sort of thing. (I have a BA English Lit, a BEd, but also a father who built the house I grew up in).

It became obvious quickly that a piece was missing. The bookcase was sold in separate pieces so you could create any high-low/long-short combination you liked, but it stipulated you needed a cross piece for every other set of shelves in a unit.

Me: where’s the cross piece?

My ex: oh, we figured we didn’t need that. The weight of the books will hold the shelves in place.

Me: But the instructions say –

My ex: [gives a long lecture on gravity, pressure, and structural integrity]

Needless to say, IKEA was right about their own product, and we had to make a separate 200km return trip to buy a cross piece. Which, by the way, cost less than $20, a tiny fraction if the full cost of the shelves.

FWIW, there’s a shelving unit at the front near the customer service desk with free parts. Don’t know if that would include the cross piece, though, if it wasn’t normally part of the package and instead had to be bought separately.

I know there are a lot of us, people whose formal education isn’t “practical” but who have had training at some point in life to make up for that lack. I wish that was more commonly true for all.
