Same here in Southern California. The heel (I’ve heard “end” infrequently) is despised/coveted by some because it has a large amount of crust.

I think that in Dutch it’s called the “broodkorst” which translates to “bread crust” @Stynx, correct me if I’m wrong?
Completely correct. 
The both ends cut are called “kapje” or “kontje”.
