The Algorithmic Beauty of Plants is a book by Przemyslaw Prusinkiewicz and Aristid Lindenmayer. It's notable as it is the first comprehensive volume on the computer simulation of certain patterns in nature found in plant development (L-systems).

This makes perfect sense when you consider that many architectural renderings are made in 3d and then touched up in Photoshop with uncanny valley-esque cut and paste photographs of people.

Blender also has a parametric tree generator, it can even automatically animate tree movement in wind. Automatic individual leaf animation is also possible, but is not shown in the video.
