When I used my intuition, though, I thought: If the ropes are shorter, the table will just be higher. Then when I read you saying:
I thought, “Oh, yes, unless you started making the ropes a lot shorter.” because I started thinking about how the system would actually look if the ropes were a lot shorter (instead of just a little shorter where the angle has barely changed).
I do think, though, that this example is kind of a test of mechanical intuition. If you look at it and think, “Whoa, what the?” vs. if you look at it and don’t see why people find it so interesting that says something about how you intuitively view the world.
Reality,of course, will be more complicated. But the reality of a regular table on four legs is a hell of a lot more complicated than we give it credit.
