"Plagiarized" Chris Foss painting sells for $5.7m

If art is perhaps the most important aspect of being human, it seems a bit strange that those who study and practice art are considered those best equipped to critique it. Unless, of course, we are all “in the best position” to critique art since we all make art, in which case your second bullet point mean nothing at all. But if your comment is meant to relatively devalue the popular perspective, you should seriously consider the extent to which the art community as a whole has been captured by the art market (which you’ve acknowledged), and the effect that will inevitably have on artists and art scholars.

There was a lawsuit against Brown - who by the way has been in the Turner Prize in the UK - resulting in a name change to the offending painting. See the film at http://www.artquest.org.uk/articles/view/art-and-appropriation about this and related cases.
