I still remember the jolt, when I read Pearl S. Buck’s “The Good Earth”, when she gave birth to her second child, a girl, after reading about all the pomp and favor given to her son when he was born. Her husband asked about the baby, expecting to hear a joyous “it’s a boy” but instead got a sober “it’s just a slave” as the wife went back to her farming, maybe an hour after giving birth.
