In other news from the Arctic Council:
The US refused to recognise Canada’s territorial claim to the NorthWest Passage, instead insisting that a narrow stretch of water with Canada on both sides is ‘international waters’;
The US refused to agree a joint final statement because the intended release included the phrase ‘climate change’. This has not happened since 1996.
Every other country (Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia and Sweden) were prepared to sign up to the statement.
