I think it is particularly bad with young men. Honestly, I’ve never been in this situation but I’d like to think that my main intention on refusal would have been to preserve the friendship, and I really can’t imagine acting aggressively. I like the article missy_pants shared, but I disagree with its main premise; I have always been able to have platonic friendships with women, and the fact that I can imagine dating some of them doesn’t affect that or cheapen the fact that I enjoy just being friends.
Still, I think this is an issue that won’t disappear with greater equality - people’s attraction works in different ways and greater understanding on all sides would prevent a lot of misunderstandings by men and women about what asking a friend out and rejecting that offer even mean. A lot of this stuff goes unsaid and people assume common knowledge.
But it seems so much faster and easier! /s

I do realise that I’m often as bad as anyone, but I’ve seen so many good relationships break apart because neither person realises that what he thinks, what she thinks, what he thinks she thinks and what she thinks he thinks are four very different things.
(I did realise that I sounded like you when I wrote that though)

I have women friends that are close but all but one are ex-girlfriends/lovers of mine. The one that isn’t used to have the same girlfriend as me (ha ha) but the three of us all went to college together. I’ve known her for about 24 years now. No attraction really but good friends. She’s the exception though.

I’m sorry, what? “Used to” implies that he is no longer pretty. He is always pretty. Tom Hardy is pretty eternal.
