Brilliant idea - break into stores serving a niche, well connected community then try to sell the hot merchandise back to that same niche, well connected community. What could go wrong?

I have a distinct memory from when I was little of a dude trying to sell my dad a hot TV - that had been stolen from our house three days earlier. I don’t know how my dad handled it exactly, but we got the TV back and I didn’t see that dude around anymore.
