I’ve heard this explanation before and I still wonder how it explains people like me who can repeatedly crack their knuckles just by making a fist. I can do it rapidly and in succession.
In any case, the linked article and this posts titles seem a bit misleading.
Scientists not science created a model which could explain the popping noise. There is no empirical data, observation, or test to backup the model. At this point it’s very nice speculation. But until someone comes up with a way to test the theory

1971 - exactly when my mother started telling me to stop cracking my knuckles, and I’ve known since then what caused the sound.

I don’t think that human cartilage (after a certain age) can regenerate. That said… I was (apparently unsuccessfully) only trying to be funny.
