I know this doctor. I only went to him once for a pulmonology follow up, then transferred to a place closer to my work for convenience. I liked him very much and when once again transferring sought to go back to him. However he’d left by then to do these near death experience studies. He was well liked by the staff too. I have read a but more on what he is doing and heard interview with him at Skeptiko http://www.skeptiko.com/sam-parnia-claims-near-death-experience-probably-an-illusion/. I think he is one of the more trustworthy researchers in this area.

More accurately, scientific evidence that using cardiac arrest for the definition of “death” is idiotic when the meaningful part of us is the brain.

Connie Willis already covered this in a far more interesting fashion, if not exactly peer reviewed. One wonders if the researchers took inspiration from her?
