Why bother with electronics? Researchers at BU made a 3D printed acoustic metamaterial that blocks 94 percent of sound (>10db) while preserving airflow, plus it’s completely passive.

To be fair, what’s shown is not claimed to be a prototype. (The news report calls it a prototype.) The setup is to prove the concept. Next up is development and refinements.

Why close down an avenue of research when no solution has yet come to market?

Besides, patent owners shouldn’t enjoy monopoly rents over problems-- just over their particular solutions.
