My leather stuff never gets ruined when I submerge it in salt water to a great depth. I know it is just an art object for fun, but the extreme uselessness of it is ruining the verisimilitude.
Wikipedia does say there were leather diving suits, then canvas, then rubber (in steampunk times), but metal helmets.
Reminds me of this
