I’ve been digging on this lately to get a larger perspective:

The ionosphere has a natural standing wave frequency (Google Schumann resonances)
When lightning strikes occur they cause a disturbance in the wave, the changed wave propagates, if you record the time of detection from known measuring stations, you can triangulate the origin of the discharge.
