Study: American policy exclusively reflects desires of the rich; citizens' groups largely irrelevant

I don’t know the situation in the US, but here in the UK any idealist party who is elected to government will have to deal with the civil service who are not elected.

There is a good reason why Yes Minister is still appreciated when we are over 30 years since it first was on TV.

If regulation is so good for corporate oligarchs then why do they spend billions of dollars trying to prevent it?

Too bad they’re still free range.

But as a wise man once said:

Money talks But it don't sing and dance And it don't walk And long as I can have you Here with me, I'd much rather be Reverend Bluejeans

So, we at least have singing/dancing/walking stuff…

What? It’s not Reverend Bluejeans?

I did a double-take on that last line, then laughed as I read further.

Just one of those lyrics that I misheard for a long time as a kid… (not quite as bad as my friend’s “big ol’ Jed and Lionel don’t carry me too far away”)

Now that I think about it, I think that’s only the heart.

So this is probably a silly idea, but even with the “money is speech” ruling preventing any limit on campaign donations, would it be possible to just heavily tax campaign donations when they go above a certain level? Like once a politician or super PAC crosses some threshold, after that 99 cents of every further dollar donated them will be taxed?

I would expect them to be mostly a crunchy (bitter tasting) empty shell…

edit: forgot tasting notes.

I believe the first step is for Americans to finally disabuse themselves of the notion that the U.S. is a Democracy. The military industrial mediasphere perpetuates the notion that we get to vote and therefore we are free. Studies like this one show that to be 100% false.

Losing our illusions can be painful. Detached irony like that seen on this comment thread is a way of acting wise while ignoring the consequences of our knowledge. True understanding requires us to put ourselves on the line, be courageous and TAKE ACTION to reclaim our own government.

Well, the telecom immunity thing was a pretty clear signal of what Obama would be like… and he never even pretended he wasn’t a warmonger during the campaign… and he completely reversed his positions on intellectual property the day Hollywood Joe Biden came on board… so, maybe those millions of highly motivated voters weren’t as observant as they might have been. Obama’s always been a pragmatist.

Then again, while I didn’t vote for Obama, I’m sure glad we don’t have Palin a cheek-tumor away from the Presidency, and I’m glad that the white male bastion was breached, and you know, at least Obama can speak coherent English. It could be quite a bit worse!

I thought it was “We’re in bed with the light on;” no matter that it doesn’t make sense to couple that with “don’t carry me too far away”

Mmmm, I’m thinking 1779 is just ten short of what we really need - 1789

I see what you did there.

That’s pretty close to how I’ve always heard it. Same for the Neil Diamond song. ¯_o.O_/¯

I always thought the lyric was, “I’d much rather be Reverend Blue Jeans.”
