I don’t know the situation in the US, but here in the UK any idealist party who is elected to government will have to deal with the civil service who are not elected.
There is a good reason why Yes Minister is still appreciated when we are over 30 years since it first was on TV.
Just one of those lyrics that I misheard for a long time as a kid… (not quite as bad as my friend’s “big ol’ Jed and Lionel don’t carry me too far away”)
So this is probably a silly idea, but even with the “money is speech” ruling preventing any limit on campaign donations, would it be possible to just heavily tax campaign donations when they go above a certain level? Like once a politician or super PAC crosses some threshold, after that 99 cents of every further dollar donated them will be taxed?
I believe the first step is for Americans to finally disabuse themselves of the notion that the U.S. is a Democracy. The military industrial mediasphere perpetuates the notion that we get to vote and therefore we are free. Studies like this one show that to be 100% false.
Losing our illusions can be painful. Detached irony like that seen on this comment thread is a way of acting wise while ignoring the consequences of our knowledge. True understanding requires us to put ourselves on the line, be courageous and TAKE ACTION to reclaim our own government.
Well, the telecom immunity thing was a pretty clear signal of what Obama would be like… and he never even pretended he wasn’t a warmonger during the campaign… and he completely reversed his positions on intellectual property the day Hollywood Joe Biden came on board… so, maybe those millions of highly motivated voters weren’t as observant as they might have been. Obama’s always been a pragmatist.
Then again, while I didn’t vote for Obama, I’m sure glad we don’t have Palin a cheek-tumor away from the Presidency, and I’m glad that the white male bastion was breached, and you know, at least Obama can speak coherent English. It could be quite a bit worse!
