Definitely not fake. The woman suffered significant injury.
Well, the study concerns car-related accidents rather than pedestrian collisions, so fair enough. But as someone who regularly reads stuff or texts while walking and maintaining perfectly fine spatial awareness and not being a nuisance to anybody, I’d ask you to consider the possibility that the people you’re having trouble with are likely just inconsiderate assholes, independent of whether they happen to be on a phone at any given time.
Sure, but my personal observation is that these incidents have increased since the advent of ubiquitous smartphones. While people did sit down with Walkmans, books, newspapers, etc in the 80s and 90s, too, they rarely use them standing up or walking. I remember being in the minority by nearly always having something to read with me and reading while waiting at the bus stop or even walking.
But Wirth smartphones and their many distractions, that usage have increased, and so have the number of people who do not care if they inconvenience others or who are barely able to do two things at a time.
I do this a lot. (though mainly reading ebooks rather than texting)
Peripheral vision is an amazing thing, i’ve never walked into anything/anyone.
Though i’d never do it when crossing a road, that’s sheer idiocy…
… when people use it.
Unfortunately, people are on a spectrum and a lot of people try doing stuff on their smartphones who can barely walk and talk at the same time.
