My experience with designers of tech is that it is often completely speculative, i.e. it doesn’t actually work and is just a wave of hands. I cringe when people say Clarke invented the communications satellite for the same reason. No, he wrote fiction. Ideas are easy, implementation is a bitch.

I think you get a patent for actually solving the problem.
