Talent skews left. Business/money skew right. But guess who decides not to hire talent that gets too out of line?
Hollywood is, at its heart, a business. But it’s a business built on illusion that portrays itself as far less right than it really is. They’re very good at projecting a lefty image for the masses, while behind the scenes they work to ensure that politicians and policymakers know the way that they really want things done.
And you are right. To get something truly lefty on screens, you have to be subtle. And simultaneously get the message out quick, before the network “decides to go in another direction.”
That’s not some Hollywood agenda. They aren’t adding token gay characters in everything to push an ideology. It’s emergent from market research. They’re doing it because the majority of the audience is asking for it. Hollywood is a cold calculating business like any other.
Much like you should look to insurance companies to see what’s actually dangerous, look to Hollywood to see how America actually feels about social issues.
