How about you just scroll past it?
Pretty much every response to this has led me to believe that Joan Jett has come under fire for thisāwith every word of her terse responses analyzed and second-guessedāsimply because sheās the most famous of anyone even remotely involved in this. The numerous other adult males who were there, some of whom may have actively participated in the rape, are not only not particularly held to blame, theyāre not even named in Cherkisā article. This article, by someone who wrote a full-length biography of the Runaways, has a rather different perspective on the whole thing.
Of course itās legalese.
Jett is work a shit ton of money, and as such attracts litigation.
Oh, like loud public performances of country music two hundred yards from your house?
not sure what the protocol is, but my post to which this was a reply has been removed? why? how does one normally find out when a post is removed? or why it has been removed? I would appreciate any hint, light shedding.
Memory is funny. Thereās really NO surprise at all that people remember events of 40 years ago differently. Itās likely that everybody there was intoxicated in SOME fashion. From descriptions in the original article, it sounds like the other band members were trying to create a narrative for the events after the fact. Thatās what people DO, thatās how memories WORK. Itās no surprise that in doing so they chose a narrative (of at least IMPLIED consent) that minimized their own possible guilt and allowed them to continue to be rock stars. And as that narrative becomes solidified it can become stronger than the actual memoriesā¦
Hey! Iām scrollinā here!
Awwā¦ Butā¦ Jon Snowā¦ slurpingā¦ Are you in the nights watch?
Iāve scrolled past it about 20 times now. Iām done scrolling past that. Iām going to be complaining about it from this point on.
Rage on, bro.
must resist urge to insert popcorn gif.
So long as itās a new, interesting popcorn GIF and not the same one inserted six times per day, thatās fine by me.
Variety, as they say, is the spice of life.
Maybe more Tyrion and less Jon Snow?
Hodor?
Iām only here for the amusement of others, so please tell me how to make you a satisfied consumer of giffage!
It is hard to have a satisfying discussion about rape disclosure without sufficient GIFs. Truth.
Fair enoughā¦ [ETA] and to be fair to me, my gif was aimed at someone who essentially dismissed the rape claims, in part because Joan Jett indicated that Fowley was a āgood guyā (which I donāt think thatās what Jett was doing). So, on some level, there just isnāt anything you can say to people who immediately reject claims of rape, and engage in some sort of victim blaming. I find it hard to argue with people who think most rape victims are liars and most rapists are just misunderstoodā¦ especially when those arguments are made about people who work in an industry that is kind of known for supporting people who have problematic behavior.
Thank you for the link. That was the most journalistic and researched article on the subject Iāve read so far.
A final note of thank you for writing this.
If proof was ever needed that
a) rape and abuse of power are difficult topics, easily sidelined in public discourse and
b) there is a reluctance to recognise public experiences of victims as integral to the shared narrative, shaped by others, rather than an isolated incident better left alone
then this discussion thread delivered that proof:
Discussion on Gifs and the sanctity of the individualās right to look after themselves silenced the conversation on communal responsibility and why solidarity is key for overcoming abuse and in creating a social context in which we are more likely to prevent it in the first place.
Nah, itās true that such discussions often get derailed, but this thread had already died down by that point, and even then, no serious discussion of the OP was āsilencedā by a few comments about gifs.
