Given the kind of damage a couple knuckleheads trying to take down game servers could accidentally wreak, I shudder to think of what smart, careful people with ill intent could manage…

It’s not as bad as you think. People smart/wise enough to be more cautious with their botnet rollout will probably use it for something more benign, and not the internet equivalent of a low-orbit ion cannon. Altcoin mining, etc. seems popular these days.
