There’s a good book by Lynette Jennings about how to work with your existing stuff and get to things you like.
Her approach is to put your furniture into three categories: love it, useful but neutral, and hate.
Ditch the hate stuff, work with the useful stuff as long as you can, and slowly replace the stuff you hate with stuff you love.
A modification of this approach is to identify the property of the object that is hated. If it is not too inherent to the object itself, change it; repaint if color, file or pad if a sharp edge…, otherwise replace the whole object. As a bonus, if the mod is done well enough, you get a little ego-stroke each time you look at it/use it; it feels for some reason way better than just buying.
